Business History.

Gordon and Lorna Murrell were born and raised in the Western District of Victoria and had operated a farm transport business throughout the region. In 1963 they moved their young family to Geelong and operated a “Milk Bar” in Roslyn Road Belmont which is still in operation. In 1964 they purchased their first taxi licence which operated in “Pivot Taxis”. Throughout the coming years they slowly increased their taxi licences and as their children grew two of them Lynette and Daryl joined the company.

On the 7th May 1987 the Murrell Family commenced Bay City Cabs and constantly increased the number of taxi licences that they owned and operated and also purchased both Torquay and Bellarine Taxi services. Eventually Bay City Cabs would own and operate well over 70 taxi licences. In 1999 Bay City Cabs won the Geelong Business Excellence award for Service. In 2007 the Murrell Family sold the Bay City Cabs taxi depot and Maxi Taxi fleet to Silver Top Taxis Melbourne. The Murrell Family still own over 60 conventional taxi licences throughout the Greater Geelong Region.

Throughout the years the Murrell Family has grown their business in many ways and now the Murrell Group of Companies operate a wide variety of businesses which include:

• Avalon Airport Shuttle
• Douro Street Carwash
• Murrell Chauffeur Drive
• Murrell Taxi Division
• Property Investment
• Surfcoast Shuttle Charter Service
• Westcoast Parcel and Courier Express

In recent years Gordon and Lorna Murrell have taken a less active role in running the business operations with Daryl and his wife Sharon and Lynette and her husband John now operating the business.

From those small beginnings well over 40 years ago the Murrell Family now operate some of Geelong’s most well known and respected family businesses.
