Humble Beginnings

The Murrell Group is a proudly family owned and operated local business right here in Geelong.

We were founded by Gordon and Lorna Murrell (Tim’s Late Grandparents) in 1964 with a single taxi operating within what was then called “Pivot Taxis”.

As the business began to grow Gordon was joined by his son Daryl in 1977 and the pair added taxi after taxi to their fleet eventually growing all the way to 43 licences.

Daryl would often talk about helping Gordon service taxis in the driveway of their family home in Belmont during the early years of his life.

A Proud Legacy

In 1987 the brave decision was made to “breakaway” from Geelong Radio Cabs and form Bay City Cabs which was the regions only privately owned and operated taxi depot.

This decision was a huge success and Bay City Cabs was operated by The Murrell Group until 2007 when it was sold to Silver Top Taxis. The Murrell Group would continue our involvement in the taxi industry as a licence holder until 2017 when destructive government changes resulted in a change in focus to other areas of operation.

By this stage we had already diversified into premium personal transportation services along with property management and taxi services had become a smaller part of our company.

Daryl took on the day to day running of the business at the very young age of 22 as Gordon semi-retired and took an increasingly less active role in the business. He would often work 7 days a week and spend his days working in the office and nights out driving either taxis or limousines.

Through tireless hard work and determination Daryl grew The Murrell Group into Geelong’s leading provider of personal transport services and would continuously expand our business with the addition of Murrell Chauffeur Drive in 1987, Charter Bus by Murrell Group in 2004 and our Nepean Close Truck Parking and Storage Complex in 2008.

A New Era

Daryl’s oldest son Tim also took a strong interest in the family business from a very young age and has very fond memories of spending school holidays and weekends at work with his Father.

They could often be found doing “letter box” drops all over the region and Tim got first hand experience in customer service and work ethic from this early time in his life with his father as a constant source of inspiration.

Unfortunately Daryl was diagnosed with terminal cancer in June of 2017 and would pass away in August of 2018. This diagnosis would lead to Tim taking on the management of the business at the age of 22 (ironically the same age Daryl has been all those years before) while supported by his Mother and fellow director Sharon.

An Even Brighter Future

This means that our business is the result of three generations of hard work from our family.

Tim and Sharon continue on the proud legacy of The Murrell Group to this very day and are very ambitious and optimistic about the future of their business.

This ambition is demonstrated by their recent “finals” place in the Geelong Business Excellence Awards and acquisition of Golden Plains Storage by Murrell Group.

From the most humble of beginnings The Murrell Family have built one of Geelong’s most enduring family businesses.

Tim and Sharon are proud of that history and working everyday towards an even brighter future.
